New Life for Historic Downtown Burlington (Conference Preview)
Posted August 25, 2016
“From the first time I saw Burlington, I was impressed by its wealth of historic architecture…we have a variety and quality of buildings unequalled in a city our size.” – Mobile Workshop Presenter Steve Frevert, Executive Director of Downtown Partners, Burlington
Burlington’s historic buildings are experiencing a new life - The Tama Building, a five-story, 1800s brick building has plans for 48 apartments; the historic JC Penny building will soon be home to a brewery; and a café/bakery brings new energy to an 1860s commercial building. These sites and others have brought millions of dollars of reinvestment to the downtown, including a recent award of $1.2 million in historic tax credits from the state.
Frevert will lead a mobile workshop tour of these sites and more at the 2016 APA-IA Planning Conference, “Bridges to the Future.” Tour participants will preview redevelopment projects, enjoy recent successes, and discuss the challenges and rewards of downtown revitalization with local developers and building owners.
